Keeping Pets Cool in the Summer Heat

With summer in full swing, it’s time to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine. Whether you’re taking your dog for a long walk, a run in the park or playing fetch in the backyard, it’s essential to keep your pet’s comfortability in mind.
Our pups can’t tell us when they are hot, but they certainly show us! Excessive panting, thicker than normal drool, pale gums, and increased heart rate are all signs that your dog is having a heat-related issue. Take the preventative course of action and follow these quick tips to keep you and your pup cool and comfortable all summer long.

  • Hydration is a must
Make sure your dog has a supply of fresh water within reach and take regular breaks during exercise to drink. You don’t want to dehydrate your dog in the heat accidentally, so take note of how often they are drinking water and make sure it’s readily available when they are thirsty!
  • Take a break in the shade
If your dog enjoys running around in the yard all afternoon, make sure they have a shady spot to take a break from the sun. Keeping a small kiddie pool of fresh water for them to stand in will help cool them down—be sure to empty it and refresh it throughout the day.
  • Avoid hot asphalt
Have you ever stood barefoot on dark pavement in the middle of summer? Just like the bottom of your feet, a dog’s paws can burn from walking on hot cement. Be careful of where you walk and try to avoid asphalt wherever you can. It’s best to let your pup run around a grassy area with lots of shade to keep their paws from accidental burns.
  • Car safety rules
Never leave your dog in a hot car. Even if the temperature outside seems mild, your car traps in heat and suffocates your pet. It’s best to leave your pet in an air conditioned home while you run errands.
We hope these tips will help you enjoy the fresh air and sunshine this summer while keeping your pet comfortable and protected from the heat!
