Why Pet Insurance is a Good Idea

It’s no secret that providing a safe and healthy life for your pets can be pretty expensive.

From pet food, to vet check-ups, to grooming costs, and all those adorable little toys and treats that make them so happy... the numbers start to add up.

And that’s not including all the extra costs that could be factored in if your pet BFF gets sick or injured. Even a simple emergency room visit after your pet eats the wrong thing can land you with a staggering bill.

You shouldn’t have to put yourself in the horrible position of choosing between your pet’s health, and your finances. That’s where pet insurance comes in.

With pet insurance, in the event of an accident or illness, you would only have to pay a small deductible—that you pick when buying your policy—and your portion of the plan’s co-insurance. The remaining bill would then be completely covered! For the average pet parent with a deductible of $250 and a 90% co-insurance, vet bills can cost a fraction of what it would without a pet health policy.
Keep in mind, no policy will cover costs associated with care for a health issue your pet already has. This is called a pre-existing condition. You won’t be denied coverage altogether, you just won’t be able to make claims on treatments related to that pre-existing condition.

Policies often increase in price once the pet becomes a senior citizen. That’s why it’s best to enroll your furry friends in a policy when they’re just puppies and kitties and have the fewest health problems. This will score you the lowest pet insurance premium possible and ensure your fluffiest family member is covered when disaster does strike.

Wagtopia's partner Lemonade has pet insurance that also offers add-ons for preventative and routine care such as wellness exams, bloodwork, annual dental cleanings, and more. There’s even a preventative care package designed especially for puppies and kittens that covers early-life expenses such as spaying and neutering, microchipping, and vaccines. There are lots of pet insurance options out there, so be sure to find the best policy for your family.

Listen, you’re a devoted pet parent, and you deserve to know that your pet has a safety net if anything happens to them. You’ll find yourself grateful for having signed your cat or dog up for health insurance well in advance... rather than full of regrets if misfortune strikes.
